Bombed-out, but otherwise typical General Cinema twin that was mothballed and eventually stripped for scrap metal long before the inevitable. There were remains of a print for the 1974 sci-fi comedy “Dark Star” up in the projection booth, but otherwise not much else.

Years Active:
As a supermarket: possibly 1972 – ???
As Odyssey: 5/25/98 – 9/5/2001

Summary:
Former supermarket of unknown name that was later converted into Northwest Indiana’s first indoor paintball arena. Likely closed when the wood roof began to fail; by 2004 it was showing partial collapse, and about three-quarters of it was gone by the time we got to it. By the time it was finally torn down it was starting to drop exterior walls, too.

Retail WastelandName:
Dunes Plaza

Address:
8000 Melton Rd.

Years Active:
1972 – 1990s?

Summary:
Retail strip originally anchored by a Zayre to the west, and the Dunes Cinema to the east. For whatever reason the east half was left to rot, while the former Zayre and immediate neighbor were eventually reoccupied. Along with the theater, the abandoned half featured a moldy-ass thrift store, some kind of church office, and I think a salon or dentist’s office… nothing exciting or even worth photographing (this picture is from behind the building).

Status: DEMOLISHED 2016; west half still open as All Mart, City Sports and other retailers
